Julie's Breast Cancer
Fight 10 months ago I was
diagnosed with stage IIIa breast cancer. I had an immediate
mastectomy and chemo followed. I finished chemo in July.
Just a few days after chemo finished I started the reconstruction
process. The first surgery was to insert an expander behind the
muscle and skin where my "new breast" would be. After inflating it
slowly over a period of weeks they went back in and replaced the
expander with a gel implant. The beginning of October I started 5
and a half weeks of radiation. I just completed radiation over a
week ago. It was a long, stressful period of my life. I
drove 2 hours round trip, by myself, EVERY DAY to have radiation.
It was exhausting. I am still wore out now. The radiation
went well. I only had a small area that burned and developed a
blister. It has gotten much better now. I am very glad to be
done. Now I only have about 6 months of Herceptin infusions left
every 3 weeks. However, I had a heart test recently called a MUGA.
It shows that my heart function has gone down due to the Herceptin, so I
have to take a break from the Herceptin for a month. I will have
another heart test to make sure my heart has recovered and then we will
give Herceptin a try again. If it effects my heart again, it will
be discontinued permanently. The longer I can take the Herceptin
the better for the cancer. However, if it messes up my heart, then
it is not doing me any good.
Great gift idea for the cross stitcher in your
life. GIFT CERTIFICATES from Julie's X Stitch for Christmas. If you
don't know what she would like, let her decide for herself with a gift
certificate.
History
of Cross Stitch
Cross stitch and
needlework can be found in the earliest history, as far back as sixth
century BC. Needlework has been around as long as there has been cloth
to work it on. Pieces of embroidery and needlework have been found
preserved in ancient Egyptian tombs and in Medieval churches.
In the Eleventh century,
tapestry was the most popular and famous of embroideries depicting the
Norman invasion of England in 1066.
Catherine of Aragon, who was Spanish and the first wife of Henry VII is
credited with bringing blackwork to England in the sixteenth century.
Blackwork was believed to be the beginnings of what we think of as cross
stitch today. It was worked with black sheep wool on white linen.
Blackwork is still popular today.
