Hardanger
Tips
Satin
Stitch for Hardanger
Hardanger
Satin stitch.
The Satin Stitch is the basic stitch that makes up the majority of a
Hardanger project. This one simple stitch can be repeated over and over
in several rows to create numerous shapes. The satin stitch is a
straight line stitch. I prefer to start my first stitch on a Hardanger
piece with a waste knot. The waste knot will eventually be cut off,
that is why is is called a "waste knot". The waste knot will be
on the front side of your project. This is just to anchor your floss
until you have a chance to stitch over the tail in the back to secure it
down permanently. A satin stitch is worked by poking your needle with
your knotted floss from the top down into your fabric. The knot will
be on the top of your fabric. Begin your first satin stitch to the left
of the knot a few holes away diagonally. You will come up through the
back of the fabric in hole one, make a straight line down through hole
two. Back up right next to hole one, through hole three, and another
straight line down through hole four.... and so on and so on until you
finish your shape.

Sand Bakkles Cookies
My great grandparents are from Norway.
Since I was a kid, we have made several traditional Norwegian recipes at
Christmas. Here is a recipe for Sand Bakkle cookies I
thought I would share with you.
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1tbs. milk
1 egg
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. Cardamom (spice)
2 cups of flour
Cream butter, sugar, milk and egg in
mixer. Add baking powder, Cardamom and flour till dough is stiff.
Chill for one hour in fridge. Press into Sand Bakkle tins in a
thin layer and bake at 400 degrees F for 5-8 minutes.

What is Julie working on?
I have a new interest. Hardanger
Embroidery. It is a traditional Norwegian embroidery method.
It produces some beautiful results. I find it relaxing and
enjoyable. My great grandparents immigrated to Wisconsin from
Norway in the 1800's. I was really interested in learning
something from my Norwegian heritage. I added a
Hardanger
section to my website with patterns and kits. I am also
working on
Hardanger tips. I have found very little information on how to
do Hardanger out there on the web, and what I have found is not very
user friendly. I would hate to see such an incredible art die out
for lack of knowledge.
My latest design is a Christmas theme. I
used 25 count Lugana in Victorian Red and Caron Collection Wildflower
floss in Claret. I am just finishing the outer edge, and the cutting
comes after that. Design comes from
Award Winning
Designs in Hardanger Embroidery 2010.
I
